Cowes Heritage

Cowes Heritage was formed by a group of volunteers in 2003 with the main aim of staging regular exhibitions, each concerning a particular aspect of the history of Cowes and surrounding area.

The Friends of East Cowes Cemetery

The “Friends of East Cowes Cemetery” group was set up to deliver the Local Heritage Initiative-funded project to make environmental improvements for this largely disused cemetery, research the history of some of those buried, catalogue all of the burial plots and produce information material from this research.

Local Government Authorities:

Isle of Wight Council Record Office & Archive

The Record Office preserves historical documents relating to the Isle of Wight and makes them available to the public for research. Its material spans the 12th-21st centuries and includes records of parish churches, estates, families, businesses, schools and local government.

Northwood Parish Council

The Northwood Parish Council was formed on 1st May 2008. It replaced the Northwood Village Management Committee which was disbanded on 31st March 2008. The Chairman is John Pullen, a Trustee of the Friends of Northwood Cemetery.

Gurnard Parish Council

Gurnard is situated on the North West coast of the Island and is the neighbouring Parish to Cowes. Richard Day, Treasurer of the Friends of Northwood Cemetery, is a former Chairman of Gurnard Parish Council.

Cowes Town Council

Cowes is served by 16 Town Councillors representing four wards: Cowes North; Cowes South; Cowes West; and Medina. David Jones, Secretary of the Friends of Northwood Cemetery, is a current Cowes Town Councillor (and former Mayor of Cowes); Jon Matthews served as a Cowes Town Councillor during the period 2008 to 2013.

Isle of Wight Council

The Isle of Wight Council is the Local Authority governing the Isle of Wight. Its Bereavement Services department hold the responsibility for managing all municipal cemeteries on the Island, including Northwood Cemetery, on a day-to-day basis.
