COWES, ISLE OF WIGHT
As part of the Northwood Cemetery Heritage Project, a newly created Heritage Resource Centre has been established. This is located in the West Chapel (on the right as you enter through the Cemetery’s main gates) in Newport Road, Cowes.
It is a facility that we hope will inspire the younger generation to appreciate the abundant natural history and heritage there is ‘on the door step’ within the 17 acres of Cemetery grounds in Cowes. Inevitably, as stocks of artefacts, photographs, pictures, library acquisitions and reference materials increase, there will be only a small sample on view at any time but we expect there’ll be something to capture everyone’s imagination. Just come along and see for yourself!
The Heritage Resource Centre is equipped with computers with Internet access, a sophisticated surround sound speaker system and a ceiling mounted projector to display images and videos. It also has state-of-the-art heating and lighting systems and kitchen facilities for teas, coffees and light refreshments.
So, it gives the local community a wonderful new venue for meetings and events. Small musical performances and film nights would be ideal uses. Whilst the Fire Regulations stipulate a maximum occupancy of 46 people, it will more comfortably accommodate seated groups of less than 30 people either in ‘theatre’ style or at tables and chairs.
Access to online research websites, such as the Isle of Wight County Press archive and FindMyPast, will make a visit to the Centre a compelling reason for researchers. In particular the ‘know how’ of the Friends of Northwood Cemetery volunteers will make a visit by those wishing to explore their family histories a rewarding experience.
The Heritage Resource Centre will be open for ‘walk-ins’ during the following hours (from 31st October):
|Tuesday||1:00pm to 4:00pm|
|Wednesday||10:00am to 1:00pm|
|Thursday||10:00am to 1:00pm|
|Friday||10:00am to 1:00pm|
|Saturday||10:00am to 1:00pm|
It can also be used outside these hours by appointment.
